Tendinitis

Tendinitis occurs when there is an inflammation or swelling of a tendon. A tendon is a fibrous area that joins muscle and bone. In cases where tendinitis has occurred there is also a chance that degeneration of that tendon is also occurring or has occurred. There are several causes and risk factors of tendinitis, symptoms, testing options and treatment options. The following is a list of the causes, symptoms and treatment options.

Causes of Tendinitis

There are several causes of inflammation that leads to tendonitis. The primary and most common form or cause of tendinitis is a result of an injury or overuse of a particular tendon. Certain athletic activities including baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball and running events may cause tendinitis in certain areas of the body. This may also be caused by diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes. The most commonly seen areas of tendinitis are in the elbow, heels, shoulders and wrists.

Symptoms of Tendinitis

There are several symptoms of tendinitis. However, there are three main symptoms that are generally associated with tendinitis and the risk factors for tendinitis. The first symptom that is commonly associated with tendinitis and tendinitis related issues is pain and tenderness along a particular tendon. This pain and tenderness will usually be near a joint and will be in one of the most common risk factor areas which include the elbow, shoulder, wrist and heel. Another symptom of tendonitis may be a pain at night time. This pain may be felt during the day in a mild area, however at night a patient may feel increased amounts of pain in the particular affected tendon area or joint area. A third common symptom of tendinitis is pain with movement. In other words, there may be some pain however that pain will increase rapidly with movement or activity to that particular area. For example, if you are a dancer and you begin having tendinitis symptoms in your heel area you will feel increased amounts of pain in the heel or heel joint area when you begin movement or activity.

Treatment Options

There are several treatment options available for tendinitis. The most common treatment is to reduce inflammation through the use of ibuprofen, aspirin or another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. This will reduce the pain and inflammation the area and will act as a way to allow the individual to begin their activities. Physical therapy is another form of treatment for tendinitis that has seen improvement in several patients. This can actually restore the tendon to functioning properly and improve healing. Surgery is a form of treatment however it is rarely used and rarely necessary. Rest and immobilization of the tendon area or affected area is usually the first source of treatment and conjoined with aspirin or ibuprofen. If this treatment does not work in physical therapy will be used if it is not already being used.
