Strep Throat

Strep throat is an infection of the throat that causes severe swelling and soreness. This illness is most common in children between the ages of five and fifteen. However, it should be noted that anyone can contract strep throat regardless of their age. This illness is contracted through body fluids from the nasal and oral areas. Family and household members are more likely to contract and transfer the strep throat virus.

Symptoms of Strep Throat

Strep throat symptoms can range from mild soreness and throat pain to severe pain and difficulty eating and swallowing. The illness symptoms develop within a few days of contracting the virus and can start with a mild symptom and gradually increase or start off with severe symptoms. The first three signs of strep throat, besides the sore throat issue, are nausea, loss of appetite and headache. A rash may or may not occur during the first few days of contracting the virus.

Treatments for Strep Throat

It should be noted that a strep test will be given by a doctor to confirm that the strep throat causing virus is in fact present in the patient. This will determine the course of treatment required for the patient. Antibiotics are generally prescribed to help patients battle the virus. The standard antibiotics, Penicllian and Amoxycillian, are generally prescribed to the patient. These should be taken until the prescription is completed. Over the counter treatments may also be suggested by the doctor. Drinking warm honey or lemon tea is a common treatment to combat the sore throat issues associated with strep throat. Popsicles, throat lozenges, room humidifiers, vaporizers and over the counter pain medications are also common suggestions.

Additional Facts Regarding Strep Throat

Strep throat is a common virus that can take up to one week or more to work through the human body. With proper antibiotics and home treatments a patient can expect to recover fully with no additional side effects. If the strep throat virus appears to be taking longer to exit the system or if other complications occur related to the virus, then the patient should seek a doctor's advice.
