Stomach Flu

The stomach flu, also known as viral gastroenteritis, is an inflammation that occurs in the stomach and intestinal area of the body. This illness is common and can cause a list of issues and symptoms. There are several forms of the stomach flu that can be contracted from various resources. The stomach flu generally takes a few days to work through the human body and is treatable through a variety of over the counter and prescribed treatment options.

Symptoms of the Stomach Flu

The two most common symptoms of the stomach flu are diarrhea and vomiting. These symptoms may normally be mistaken for food poisoning. Severe dehydration, headaches, aches and pains as well as fevers are also symptoms of the stomach flu. If these illnesses persist more than 24 hours or if severe dehydration occurs the patient should seek medical care immediately.

Treatment Options for the Stomach Flu

There are several treatment options related to the stomach flu. A common method to handle the stomach flu and to avoid dehydration issues is to drink Gatorade and other similar fitness drinks. Stay away from any type of fruit drink or high sugar drink. Drinks should be consumed in small amounts over a longer period of time. Food should also be consumed in small amounts. Fresh fruits are an optimal choice when dealing with the stomach flu. In regards to medicine as a treatment option for stomach flu, patients should note that the use of antibiotics will not work. Over the counter medications that help with diarrhea can be used sparingly and according to manufacturer's directions.

Children and the Stomach Flu

Children and infants that develop the stomach flu should be taken to a health care professional immediately. This is due in part to the high level of dehydration and the speed at which children and infants can become dehydrated from this illness. Breastfeeding can continue along with pedialyte style drinks and water. Remember, the stomach flu will run a normal course in a few days and work its way through the body. The best action to take is to keep the body hydrated during this time and to maintain a healthy amount of rest.
