Complaints of a stiff neck usually happen after a period of keeping the neck in one position or an awkward position for a long period of time. Driving, sleeping without the proper neck support and sitting at a computer in a non-ergonomic position can lead to stiff neck conditions. There are several symptoms of a stiff neck along with various treatment options to help soothe the conditions and bring the neck muscles away from pain and to a normal condition.
Symptoms of Stiff Neck
There are several symptoms of a stiff neck. The most evident symptoms are related to a pain or soreness in the sides and back of the neck. The patient finds it difficult to move their neck from side to side and even back to front. This pain can also lead to a tension headache and in worst case scenarios, a migraine headache.
Causes of Stiff Neck
The causes of stiff neck syndrome and symptoms can come from a variety of sources. The most common source is a strain to the neck muscle area. This strain of the neck muscles can be induced by previously mentioned issues such as sitting at a computer for long period of times, improper support during sleep and sitting with the neck in a single position for too long. Stiff neck can be caused by tension as well. High stress levels can cause the neck muscles to tense up and the neck to become stiff. This will create a tension that will hinder the amount of movement and individual has in their neck and a feeling of pain throughout the sides and back of the neck.
Stiff neck can also be strain of the spine as well as strain to the nerves surrounding the neck and spine. Meningitis and infections can also be a cause of stiff neck. If the stiff neck symptoms last for longer than a few hours or few days, seek a doctor’s advice.
Treatments for Stiff Neck
There are treatments for a stiff neck that are easy to apply. The most common over the counter treatment for a stiff neck is to take an anti-inflammatory medication. Muscle rubs also help with stiff neck issues. For long term treatment options and preventative measures, patients with stiff neck issues can change their sitting position, work environment that may be contributing to their stiff neck or they may purchase a better neck support for their sleeping hours.
