Parenting can be defined as the process of encouraging and supporting the development of a child from the period of infancy until the point of adulthood. During this time, parents focus on the emotional, social, physical, and intellectual aspects of the development of their child or children. The definition of parenting is not only focused on those who have a biological relationship with their child, but also to those who are providing the development and support towards children of which they are not directly biologically related. It is believed that although parenting is generally the responsibility of the biological or adopted parents of the child in question, there have been instances where society and governments have been known to have their own unique role within the process of parenting as well. There are many aspects which are known to have a large impact on the decisions of those who are responsible for being a parent and taking care of a child. It is thought that elements like income, social class, and wealth are often responsible for having an impact on what types of elements will play a role within the parent’s decision to care for their children and rear them properly. Often times, a lack of money is considered to be one of the major factors which define how a child will be raised by their parent. Ultimately, these types of elements have an impact on the overall parenting style that is used to provide children with the support and encouragement that is gained between the period of infancy and adulthood. It is believed that there are several types of parenting styles and that parents either choose to specifically use one style or may use a combination of styles in the overall development of their child. This may include authoritative parenting, permissive or indulgent parenting, authoritarian parenting, or may lack any presence at all in the situation of children who are dealing with an absentee father or mother within their lifetime. These parenting styles may come from either parent, whether it is the father or mother. It is common for one parent to exhibit one particular style of parenting while the other parent offers more permissive or indulgent parenting styles instead. In situations where one parent is considered to be an absentee, it is also common for the remaining parent to take on the role of authoritarian or authoritative parenting styles.
