Obesity

Obesity is considered to be a condition where excess body fat is created to the extent that it may have a detrimental effect on the affected individual’s health. This can lead to an level of reduced life expectancy and many other health problems which can pose serious risks to the individual. Individuals are considered to be overweight or obese when they have a body mass index which is exceeding 30 kilograms. The presence of obesity increases the likelihood of more serious diseases developing, which may include heart disease, obstructive sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and asthma. Obesity is generally caused by an excessive intake of food or a lack of physical activity. However, there are situations where obesity may be caused by genetic predisposition or various types of disorders that the individual has had since birth. There is some evidence that some individuals who are dealing with obesity actually eat very little but deal with the issue of gaining weight because they have a slow metabolism. Although this is not always the case, it is believed that these individuals have to focus more on physical activity in order to ensure that they burn calories and fat correctly. Generally speaking, the use of diet and exercise are the main types of treatment that are used to deal with obesity. The quality of diet can be improved by reducing the amount of energy-dense foods that people are eating, such as those that are high in sugars and fight. It can also be improved by increasing the incorporation of dietary fiber within the regular nutrition plan. There are some drugs and medications which can be used to help reduce the issues associated with feeling hunger or inhibit fat from being able to form within the body, assuming that the individual is able to eat a suitable diet. If doctors determine that individuals are not losing weight from changes to their diet, the use of medication, and the incorporation of exercise, then they may consider recommending the use of a gastric balloon or some type of surgery in order to help assist the individual with weight loss. Obesity is considered to be one of the leading causes of death which can be prevented if individuals are willing to take action. It affects both adults and children, men and women. It is considered to be one of the most serious issues found within public health in our current century. Although it was previously considered to be a symbol of wealth or possible high fertility in the past, it is now considered to be a serious stigma.
