The term mental health refers to your cognitive and emotional wellbeing. It is defined by the way you think and behave on a daily basis. If you are “mentally healthy” it means you don’t have a mental disorder. Mental disorders are common, with approximately 255 of adults having a mental disorder at least once in their life. They range in severities, with some being temporary while others are chronic. The state of your mental health can change your ability to live and enjoy your life, have personal relationships, and be physically healthy. A variety of mental disorders can affect your life, however there are treatment options including medications and therapy.
Who can get a mental disorder?
Mental disorders or health problems can affect anyone, regardless of your gender, age, economic status, or ethnicity. Some people are born with these mental disorders while others occur over time.
Types of Mental Disorders
Mental health disorders are a type of dysfunction of your overall mental health. This includes a variety of illnesses including anxiety disorders like panic disorder, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder. There are also mood disorders such as bipolar disorder, depression, dysthymia, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Another classification of mental disorders are called schizophrenic disorders. These are a group of illnesses where someone might experience delusions, hallucinations, withdrawal, lack of motivation, or lethargy. The most common types of serious mental disorders are schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression.
There are a variety of treatments available for people with mental health disorders. The first group of treatments are self-help, which means you can manage your disorder on your own. This includes having a proper diet and minimizing fatty acids or caffeinated beverages, and getting regular exercise. Other common treatments for mental health disorders include medications, psychotherapy, inpatient treatment such as detox (withdrawal), outpatient treatment programs, and support groups. Medications often used to treat mental health illnesses include antidepressants for depression, mood stabilizing medications to treat depression and mania, anti-anxiety medications for the different anxiety disorders, and anti-psychotic medications for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Psychotherapy is a common non-medicated treatment route for mental health disorders, which includes counseling or talk therapy. This may also be combined with different medications to treat mental health disorders. During these sessions, you will be guided through conditioning your moods, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Brain stimulation treatments are sometimes used as well for certain types of mental health disorders.
