Hypnosis is when someone goes into an altered state where you seem asleep or in a trance. Clinical hypnosis is used to treat a variety of afflictions that are mental or psychological, including addictions to things such as food, drugs, alcohol, and smoking. Quitting smoking is often close to impossible for people who are addicted to the tobacco. Hypnosis is used for many individuals who have tried everything else and nothing seems to be working. While under hypnosis, you appear to be completely unconscious but you are aware of your surroundings and not completely asleep. You also have complete control over your own actions, despite what some stage performers may tell you.

Hypnosis for help with quitting smoking, also known as smoking cessation is done to help them think of unsavory things when they smoke next. For example, a hypnotist will convince the patient that when they light up a cigarette, it will remind them of something very unpleasant like truck exhaust, or taste poorly. This is to help discourage them from smoking the next time they light up. There is another method called the Spiegel’s method which is a smoking cessation hypnosis technique focusing on three main areas; the fact that smoking poisons the body, you need your body to survive, and you should respect and protect your body. This includes a version of self-hypnosis so that your repeat these messages over and over again.

How does Hypnosis Work

First of all, it should be noted that hypnosis doesn’t work on everyone. About 25% of people are unable to be hypnotized and the intensity of hypnosis will vary. Hypnosis uses a variety of methods to help the patient enter a different stage of alertness with heightened brain activity where the hypnotist can change the way they think or react to something, such as smelling foul odors when smelling cigarette smoke. These methods are meant to change the way the person feels about smoking in order to discourage it in the future.

Finding a Hypnotherapist

If you’re interested in trying hypnosis for quitting smoking, start by asking your doctor if he or she knows one in the area. They might work closely with hypnotherapists who have a good reputation. Do your research before deciding on a hypnotherapist, being sure they have experience, as well as being trained, licensed, and have the proper credentials. They should also be willing to answer any and all questions and not assume hypnosis works on everyone.
