Holistic medicine is a type of healing medicine that heals the entire person, including their body, spirit, mind, and emotions. This is based on the belief that ally medical conditions and ailments are treated by healing the entire self for optimum healing. This is obtained by creating the right balance in life, body, and spirit. For example, if someone has a headache, their holistic practitioner will heal their entire body, emotions, spirit and mind rather than just offering up a solution for getting rid of the headache. Many times, other ailments are found that might be causing the headache.

Principles of Holistic Medicine

In holistic medicine, practitioners believe that healing is about the entire body and focusing on well-being and overall health. The principles of holistic medicine include the fact that the patient is a person and not a disease, every has natural healing abilities, healing requires a team approach of the patient and practitioner to address their entire life not just the ailment in question, and that treatment involves fixing the root cause of the condition, just cause getting relief for the symptoms.

Types of Holistic Medicine Treatments

There are a variety of treatment options used by holistic practitioners including making lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, consoling, or psychotherapy to encourage self-healing, acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage therapy, herbal therapy and naturopathy, and homeopathy.

Finding a Holistic Practitioner

If you are considering switching to natural medicine or want to supplement western medicine with holistic techniques, you should be picky with what place you choose. Start by asking for referrals from your regular doctor or anyone you know who visits a holistic practitioner such as a friend, relative, neighbor, or co-worker. Do your research before committing to one holistic practitioner. Find out what their reputation in your community is by reading reviews and testimonials, find out where they are affiliated such as hospitals or professional organizations, and be sure they are properly licensed and certified. Meet with the practitioner and be sure you feel comfortable with them. You will be spending a good deal of time in your office so it should be a pleasant environment. You should always be completely aware of the different treatment options available. Some holistic medicine practitioners only offer certain methods, while other practitioners offer other methods. Find out what will work best for you before deciding where to go for treatments. It is very common to combine western medicine with natural and holistic medicine.
