Dental Care

Dental care is the process of taking care of your teeth in order to reduce the risk of tooth decay, cavities and gum diseases like gingivitis or periodontal disease. The following covers the basics of dental care such as brushing your teeth and flossing twice a day, and eating foods that are low in sugar but provide a healthier mouth such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products. Part of dental care includes seeing a dentist for a check-up and professional cleaning twice a year.

Why Dental Care is Important

There are many reasons why you need to pay close attention to basic dental care. For one, it is going to help prevent tooth decay. It will also prevent more serious conditions including gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontal disease. These diseases can damage your gum tissue and the bones that support your teeth, which may cause a loss of your teeth. Dental care on a daily basis will save you money by reducing the amount of dental procedures you need. Dental care also prevents bad breath, especially when you brush and floss at least twice a day. Brushing your teeth regularly also prevents staining from drinks, food, and tobacco. Your overall health is always improved by taking good care of your teeth.

How to Avoid Dental Problems

There are ways to avoid these gum diseases and other dental issues, by taking good care of your teeth on a regular basis. Begin by eating a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Avoid dark sodas, sugary food and drinks, coffee and tobacco. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, preferably in the morning and at night. Floss at least once a day to remove the plaque left behind after brushing your teeth. When choosing your toothpaste, be sure it contains fluoride to prevent cavities and tooth decay. Your dentist might also recommend using mouthwash 1-2 times a day. Cleaning your tongue is also important and something many people forget to do. You can use your toothbrush to cling your tongue or get a special cleaning device. Lastly, schedule regular appointments with your dentist for an exam and cleaning.

Taking your Child to the Dentist

When your child reaches 6 months old, they will have their first dentist appointment. During this appointment, their mouth and teeth will be examined to determine if they will have any future dental work to be done. You should bring your child to the dentist before or near their first birthday for the first cleaning and full dental exam, or when the primary teeth appear. By taking your child to the dentist early, you can avoid potential cavities and catch problems early.
