Brain Food

Brain Food

You may think your intelligence and mental performance is set in stone, but there are actually things you can do to improve how your brain functions, including eating the right foods. Many different types of foods are considered brain food including sugar to keep you sharp, carbohydrates to be soothing and relaxing for your mind and many other foods that keep you motivated, help you concentrate, improve your memory function, speed up your reaction times, reduce stress and tune the sensorimotor skills in your brain. The following will show you the right foods and the correct way to eat and drink throughout the day for optimum brain function.

Morning

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day so what you eat in the morning is very important. First of all, while caffeine gives you an instant boost, it is temporary and that combined with sugar will result in a crash either late morning or early afternoon and therefore is not considered brain food. Rather than simple carbohydrates in the morning such as bread products, you want to go for complex carbohydrates such as fruit. The molecules in fruit break down gradually throughout the day, letting your brain boost last for a longer period of time. The best fruit with complex carbohydrates are berries and citrus fruits. Another morning food that is considered brain food is a high-protein cereal which provides your brain with energy for improved memory.

Afternoon

Along with the aforementioned fruit and breads, vegetables are also great brain food. When you reach lunchtime, having vegetables such as in a salad is great for your brain. Eggs will also work well as their nutrients offer you a boost of brainpower by speeding up the nerve cell signals in your brain. Fish is another important brain food due to the high level of Omega-3 fatty acids which help build cell membranes. The nutrients in yogurt help improve the signals of your brain neurons.

Drinks

It is equally important to stay hydrated throughout the day with at least 80 ounces of water each day. By drinking enough water during the day, you will be able to reduce your stress hormones which relaxes your brain and improves your mental alertness. Fruit juice and de-caffeinated tea will offer you the same result. As with eating sugar, avoid sugary drinks like soft drinks. The boost they give your brain is temporary and will be gone in a short amount of time. You will notice a decrease in brain activity when you increase your sugar intake. If you decide to drink fruit juice, it is best to get no sugar added fruit juice that is natural and not made from concentrate.
