Acid Reflux

If you often feel a burning, acid feeling in your upper stomach area that almost feels like it is reaching your throat, you may be suffering from acid reflux disease. Acid reflux is a common disease that causes discomfort in the upper abdomen area of the stomach. It includes a variety of symptoms ranging from heartburn to chest pain with a burning sensation and can happen at any time, but is common more than 2-3 times a week. Acid reflux may also lead to gastro-esophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD.

Causes of Acid Reflux Disease

Acid reflux disease is a very common disease occurring in the abdomen. It is caused by a variety of factors, but essentially is from your diaphragm keeping excess acid which essentially causes the acid to move up from your esophagus and cause you to feel a burning or heartburn sensation. Some risk factors for acid reflux disease include being overweight, eating a large meal just before laying down or bending over, eating snacks just before bedtime, drinking carbonated beverages or alcohol, being pregnant, smoking, eating citrus, fatty, or spicy foods, eating chocolate, or taking certain medications like blood pressure medications, ibuprofen, and aspirin.


The main symptom of acid reflux is the burning sensation, similar to heartburn, after eating a meal and laying down or eating the foods mentioned above. With acid reflux disease you might also have a regurgitation feeling which is a bitter or sour acid that feels like it is coming back up your throat or even into your mouth. Some other symptoms you might experience are gassiness and burping, bloating of the abdomen, black stools, nausea, wheezing or dry cough, consistent hiccups, unexplained weight loss, and the feeling that good is stuck in your throat.

Treating Acid Reflux Disease

There are ways you can begin treating acid reflux at home simply by changing habits and being pickier about what you eat and how you eat. Some ways to treat it from home include not eating 3 hours before bed, sleeping up in a chair during naps if you have eaten a snack before, quitting smoking, eater smaller meals throughout the day rather than one big meal, avoiding tight clothes or belts, limiting the acidic and spicy foods you eat, cutting back on caffeine and carbonated beverages, and working to lose weight. There are also medications you can take for treating acid reflux and heartburn, including antacids that will calm down the acid in your stomach. Some of the common brands of antacids include Tums, Rolaids, Maalox, and Alka-Seltzer.
