Incontinence is when those who suffer from it have problems with their bladder and bowels. It is when a person has an involuntary loss of the urine or bowels and excretes urine and fecal matter. The two types are called urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence. Nearly 20 million women suffer from it while almost six million men suffer from urinary incontinence. Also, countless others suffer from fecal incontinence.

Causes of Incontinence

This problem is not a disease or condition by itself but rather something that tells you there is something else going on with your body. There are certain risk factors associated with this problem. These include cough or asthma, constipation, diabetes, hormone changes in women, certain medications, weight problems such as obesity, pregnancy and giving birth, prostate problems in men and smoking. Knowing the causes will help you prevent this problem from occurring. If you have a problem with either urinary incontinence or fecal incontinence you should see a doctor immediately.

Types of Incontinence

There are actually two types of urinary incontinence and then there is fecal incontinence. The two types of urinary incontinence are stress urinary incontinence and urge incontinence. The stress urinary incontinence happens when you sneeze, cough and even laugh. The urge incontinence happens when you suddenly have to go and cannot hold it any longer. The urge incontinence will happen even if you have just emptied your bladder recently.

Treatments for Incontinence

There are many different treatments for this type of problem. They include doing exercises, medications, eating a balanced diet, lifestyle changes, bulking agents and even some surgeries can help stop this problem. If the problem cannot be cured, there are things such as absorbent products and urine collection devices.

Facts about Incontinence

Although there are more than 25 million Americans who suffer from Incontinence, they rarely talk about it. Women usually wait six years to talk to their doctor about this condition because they are so embarrassed about it. It is a fact that it is just as common for younger people to suffer from this problem as it is for older people. This problem happens to more than 200 million people in the whole world. It is not normal to leak any urine at all. It is a fact that sounds or even thoughts can trigger an accident. Drinking small amounts of water throughout the day might help stop the problem. Don’t be afraid to speak to your doctor about incontinence if you suffer from it. You are not the only one who has this problem.
