About Hypertension

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a condition that can cause health problems. One of the health problems it can cause is heart disease. Your blood pressure is considered by how much blood is pumped to your heart. The more blood pumped to your heart, the higher your blood pressure is. Hypertension or high blood pressure is sometimes called the silent killer. This is because anyone can have this disease for many years without having any symptoms. Blood pressure that is not kept under control can cause some serious health problems including a stroke and a heart attack. High blood pressure affects almost everyone and can develop over the years. It can be easily detected and once you and your doctor find out that you have it you can easily control it and live a healthy and happy lifestyle.

Symptoms of Hypertension

There really are no true signs or symptoms of high blood pressure. This is why it is called the silent killer. You will most likely always get your blood pressure taken every time you see a doctor. If your blood pressure is high for a while, your doctor might put you on medication and a restricted diet to control it. You will also be better off exercising because this can help control it as well. Some signs to watch out for that could mean you have high blood pressure are nausea, dizziness, headaches, visual problems and even sometimes kidney failure.

Causes of Hypertension

To know the causes you need to know the types of hypertension. There is primary hypertension and secondary hypertension. Primary has no cause and can just develop over the years. Secondary hypertension causes a higher blood pressure than primary does. There are different problems and medications that can cause secondary hypertension. They include kidney problems, congenital blood vessels, birth control pills, cold medicine, some prescription medications, some over-the-counter medications and even decongestants. Another cause might be use of illegal drugs such as cocaine.

Treatments for Hypertension

Different things can help treat high blood pressure. This includes prescription medications, a healthy lifestyle and exercise. Your doctor will prescribe you something that he thinks will help control your blood pressure. He will also advise you to change to a healthier diet and start exercising more often. Doing these things and taking your medication the right way can help control your hypertension and allow for a better quality of life.
