About Allergies

There are many people who suffer from allergies. An allergen is a foreign substance that flows through the air. While non-allergic people are not bothered by these foreign substances in the air, those who are allergic to certain things will have problems. Allergens include pollen, pet dander, foods, certain medications, mold and dust mites. There are more than 50 million Americans with some type of allergies. This includes millions of children. In fact, allergies are cause for as much as two million missed school days every year.

Causes of Allergies

Allergies are caused by antigens which are foreign substances that invade the body. Another way to explain antigens is that they are able to form antibodies. Antigens might or might not cause the allergic reaction to happen if the person is susceptible to them. Antigens also cause the production of iGE. iGE’s are an antibody that we all have in our bodies in small amounts. However, those who are allergic to different things have an immune system that creates larger amounts of these antibodies.

Symptoms of Allergies

Although allergies can start at any age, even in the womb, children can still have allergies even as they grow older. The symptoms can vary with different allergies but most of them start with itchy and watery eyes, runny nose, itchy throat and the throat can actually close up if left untreated, sneezing, nasal congestion, signs of shock and even passing out. Symptoms can start out with seasonal irritants such as mold and pollen and other allergies symptoms can be all year like dust mites and food.

Treatment for Allergies

Although there is no cure for allergies, there are some things one can do to help relieve the terrible symptoms they have from allergies. First, make sure you know what is causing the allergy and stay away from it. For children who suffer from allergies, parents will need to educate them on their allergy and what will happen if they come in contact with the allergen. Another thing is to remove all signs of the allergen immediately. This means if someone in your household is allergic to pets, remove the pet immediately. There are also certain over-the-counter and even prescribed medications to help relieve the symptoms of allergies. However, if someone comes in contact with an allergen and nothing seems to help, and if their throat starts to close up, they should seek medical help as soon as possible.
